Roof Soft Wash & Moss Removal - Worksite Preparation

When performing a roof cleaning, the following worksite preparation steps should be followed.

  1. Identify if the roof has tie-offs or if some need to be installed for the job.

  2. Make sure your ladder uses roof standoffs in compliance with OSHA guidelines and to reduce the risk of damaging the customer's gutters.

  3. Take note of any obstruction to the ladder and hose movements around the home.

  4. Take note of where all downspouts terminate. Remember, runoff from the roof will go into the gutters and will exit the downspouts. The soft wash solution can kill grass, poison feeders, kill vegetation, destroy gardens, and create clean spots on concrete. Ensure that each downspout is plumbed to an area that will not be damaged by the soft wash solution. If necessary, use temporary plastic downpipe bags to redirect runoff away from sensitive areas.

  5. Protect or move sensitive objects that may come in contact with the soft wash solution. This can include but is not limited to: furniture, cameras, bird feeders, Christmas lights, spotlights, wall decor, planter boxes, gardens, water reclamation, satellite dishes, solar panels, wood structures, etc.

  6. If performing moss removal or gutter cleaning, lay down tarps to collect debris that is blown or knocked off of the roof and gutters.

  7. Identify any damage or leak areas in the gutters where the soft wash solution may leak and damage the property. Make patches as needed or inform the customer.

  8. Make sure each technician is equipped with an OSHA-approved fall protection harness and that they are following OSHA guidelines for ladder and roof fall protection safety.

  9. Once on the roof and properly secured, inspect the roof for any soft spots, pre-existing damages, or leak points. Take photos of the entire roof for documentation and marketing purposes.
