Roof Soft Wash & Moss Removal - Expectations

When cleaning a roof using the soft wash method, it’s essential to understand that all the moss will not die and come off immediately in every situation. With a stage 1 roof, as defined above, the soft wash treatment will work quickly. 2-4 hours after thoroughly applying the soft wash treatment, the organics should be completely dead and the black discoloration removed from the roof.

With stages 2 and 3, the large clusters should be removed, and the remaining moss should be thoroughly doused. Within 15-30 minutes, the moss turns yellowish-white, indicating the treatment is working, and the moss is dying. If left, the moss will die and fall off the roof naturally with rainwater. This process typically takes 4-12 weeks, depending on the amount of rain in the upcoming forecast. Alternatively, you may wait 30 minutes to 1 hour after applying the chemical and perform a low-pressure rinse to remove a majority of the dead moss right away. More on this method later. The result will be that 100% of the moss will be dead by the time you leave, and 30-70% of the moss will be removed if you perform any removal steps or rinses.
